16 1/2" square, very thick glass; no markings The ship in this bottle is a two-masted vessel with a small sail on the aft mast. The ship rests in water made of clay and painted, and behind it is a scene with three-dimensional buildings, including a lighthouse. There are bits of tin foil decoration on the ship, notably the flag onto which is pasted a paper name "NARADA". The light on the lighthouse is also a bit of foil. (Full length picture and closeup)
c 12" round liquor bottle; "BL" monogram pressed into the glass on the back. A fully rigged four-masted vessel rests in a sea of cotton. The sails are decorated with cutouts from cigar and other advertising cards. (Full length picture)
10 3/8" round; "one half gallon" jug, handle taken off by the artist and painted over This chunky bottle holds a steam-powered ship which is painted gold. It has many parts and details. (Full length picture)
10" round; no markings; seams show from mold This steamer with two masts and two chimneys is painted dark blue and white and yellow. The notable feature of this bottle is the man standing on a gangplank attached to an extension of the stopper. (Full length picture)
5 3/4" including stopper circular flat flask This type of bottle has several known examples, with lots of variety in the ships and what hangs from the stoppers. Five are shown on this page. In this bottle is a three-masted sailing vessel with rigging. The ship is red and green, with a white keel. A lifeboat hangs from the crosspiece of the stopper, inside of which is a bisque "frozen Charlotte" doll. The banner has a paper label saying "Soldiers Home." 5 3/4" including stopper circular flat flask This type of bottle has several known examples, with lots of variety in the ships and what hangs from the stoppers. This one has a woman in the lifeboat, hanging from the stopper. It has three masts and a smokestack. It is signed "Logan" on the flag. (Larger picture and links to other bottles like this)
6 1/8" including stopper circular flat flask, a clock face and the word "REGULATOR" embossed in the glass on one side This type of bottle has several known examples, with lots of variety in the ships and what hangs from the stoppers. The ship is a rigged three-masted ship without a keel. An American flag waves from the back, and a long paper banner has become detached from the middle mast. From the stopper hangs a black and yellow barrel with "O A xx" on one side and paper cutouts saying "Soldier's Home" on the other. (Full image and closeups)
6 1/8" including stopper circular flat flask This type of bottle has several known examples, with lots of variety in the ships and what hangs from the stoppers. In this bottle is a side-wheeler river steamboat painted in yellow, black, white and blue. Hanging from the crosspiece of the stopper is a lifeboat full of people, and a paper strip on the banner is inscribed "Soldiers Home". At least one similar bottle was found in Columbus, OH; another in Dayton, OH; and another in eastern Indiana. (Larger picture)
c 6" including stopper circular flat flask Another example of the small ships in little round flasks, this one contains a rigged sailing ship very similar in design to the one two rows above. The painting on the bow of the ship and the painted stopper are the same, but in this one, a painted life boat holding the body of a man lying down is hanging from the bottom of the stopper. A label inside reads "National Home for DVS" which I believe means "Disabled Volunteer Soldiers." The lifeboat is labeled "Daisy O." (Full image, two sides)
12" long, 3 1/4" in diameter round quart The ship in this bottle has two masts and two smoke-belching (white and gray cotton) smokestacks between them. The guardrails around the decks are made from white fabric netting. The foremast flies a diagonally drawn Italian flag with the initials S.M.; a smaller Italian flag flies on the bow. The aft mast flies a white flag with a red cross on it. The ship is named "Rosa" on both sides of the bow. (Full image)
