Mary Deupree and John Cheaney

Mary Deupree (1784-1834) m. 1801 John Cheaney (c1770-c1852). They moved from Charlotte Co., Va., to Nicholas Co., Ky, prob. between 1805 and 1808, where he remained for both 1820 and 1830 censuses. By 1840, he had moved to Henderson Co., Ky., but by 1849, he was living in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Ky. Six children:

M1. William Deupree Cheaney (1802-betw 1880/88) m. 1823 Ellen/Eleanor Bowen (c1805-1888) They lived in Nicholas Co., Ky, for the 1830 census, Henderson Co., Ky. for the 1840-1880 censuses, and Evansville, Ind. where she is buried. Nine children:
M2. Elizabeth Ann Cheaney (1804-1872) m(1) 1823 John R. Graves (d c1837), m(2) 1855 James Sanders. By 1830 the Graves family was living in Henderson Co., Ky. She moved in with her father after her first husband died moved to Christian Co., Ky. by 1850, married her second husband there, died and is buried there. Five children:

M3. Julia Harvey Cheaney (1805-1881). She was married 3 times and had no children.

M5. Horatio Leonard Cheaney (1810-1892) m(1) 1832 Elizabeth Towler (c1811-1843), m(2) c1845 Mary A. Hill (c1810-1877). He and his second wife are buried in Henderson, KY. He had at least six children, but several died young, and their names are not known. Three children whose names are know (the first two from his first marriage):

                  • M4. Joseph Madison Cheaney (1808-1863) m(1) 1828 Sally Corbin (d betw 1839-1846), m(2) Sarah Ann Beard (1817-1863). He and his second wife are buried in Versailles, Morgan Co., Mo. where he had gone to be a Baptist preacher. In the 1850 census, he is listed as a saddlemaker, which trade he passed down to some of his sons. Eleven known children, five from his first marriage and six from the second:

                    • M4B. William Marshall Cheaney (1832-between 1880/1900) m. 1859 Amanda Melvina Graves, his cousin #2.D above. They moved to Waller Co., Tx. by 1892, probably c1860. Four known children:
                      • M4B i. Lee Cheaney (c1860- ). No further record found, but probably had a daughter who was living with her grandmother in 1900 census:

                      • M4B ii. Sallie Cheaney (1866-after 1920) m 1885 T. D. Aiken who died between 1893 and 1900. She moved to Houston by 1920 and lived with one of her daughters. Four known children:

                        • M4Bii b. Ira William Aiken (1889-1970) m Eleanor Watson and had three children in Houston

                        • M4E. Leander Cheaney (1838/9-1915) m. 1866 Nancy Katherine Linn (1846-1911). They lived in Eastland Co. Tx. He was for a time a scout for Kit Carson; her mother is said by family to have been half native American. Ten children:

                        • M6C. Virginia Augusta Cheaney (1848-1904) m 1865 James Henry Grigsby (1840-1919). They moved to Ennis, Ellis Co. Tx. after 1880. Four children:
                          • M6C i. Mary Elizabeth Grigsby (1865-1950) m. 1888 Harry Arthur van Gordon (1860-1927). They lived in Ellis Co. TX until his death; she then moved to Dallas. Six children:
                            • M6Ci a. Jennie Augusta van Gordon (1888-1974) m. 1909 Neil Sims. Texas. Three children.
                            • M6Ci b. Nannie Pearl van Gordon (1890-1974) m. Charles Hutton Magee. Three children.
                            • M6Ci c. Anna Adleta van Gordon (1893-1925) m. 1916 Edward Ernest Alkire. Three children.

                        • M6D. Price Cheaney (1859-1928) m(1) Porah Boswell (1860-1898), m(2) Mary Lou Hall (1871-1903), m(3) 1905 Laura Marie Roynon (1869-1956). They lived and are all buried in Dallas TX. He was a dentist. Five children, two from his first marriage, two from the second marriage, and one adopted with his third wife:
